Something someone has not mentioned is the fact that Royals and Imperials of both Europe and Asia before they were married would often have same-sex consorts. It was not considered a violation of the wedding bed to have a same-sex relationship and some Royal Families -encouraged- the sexual outlet so that there would be no illegitimate heirs running around out there.

Then when marriage was arranged the newlyweds often had to choose whether or not to keep their consorts whom they had often grown to love. Marriage was a political proposal and all that was cared was that offspring was sired. So oftentimes the childhood same-sex consort stayed on as a handmaiden or advisor or some other position and it was kept quiet. After all most sovereigns didn't sleep in the same bed and most servants knew to keep their mouths shut. The headsman's axe was often kept quite sharp. Besides? For them? It was normal.
